Bug Report OBS won't open the first time

Ok so i'm having an issue with OBS Studio x64 under Windows 10 x64. The issue is that the first time i go to open OBS either after restart or just for the day, the program does not open a window and does not show an active taskbar icon. My webcam shows as being active and it shows up in Task Manager, but not as an "App" but a "Background Process". Ending the task in Manager and immediately reattempting to open the program allows it to come up again right away like it usually does.

This setup has been working for months now, and this issue has only started occurring since one or two updates ago. Once the initial issue with it not opening is done it will continue to open fine if i close and reopen, for the same day at least. When i try and get things setup to stream they next day the issue more often than not comes back. System is usually not restarted in between sessions.

If there are any thoughts about this or information needed please let me know.

Next time it happens, right click it in task manager and choose "Create dump". Zip and upload the .dmp file to a sharing site such as https://plik.root.gg/ and send it as a PM to me or another developer (it may contain personal data like the stream key so don't post it on the forum).

Will do, i've already cleared the issue for today, so i could give as much info as i could for this thread so i'll be sending it tonight or tomorrow whenever it occurs again.

This is very reproducible for me. It happens every time after a fresh boot. OBS Studio basically doesn't show up anywhere but in Task Manager. I took a dump of that process. If I launch OBS Studio a second time then it shows up but complains that something else is using the capture card and then there are two instances of OBS Studio in the Task Manager. If I close out and then kill the orphaned process (1st instance because the 2nd one cleans up after itself nicely) and then relaunch it everything works fine afterwards.

So the daily routine for me as been:
  1. Start OBS Studio
  2. Kill the orphaned process
  3. Start OBS Studio again.
It will only get orphaned the 1st time you start it after a clean boot. Any after following the steps I outlined it works fine.

I took a dump of the "orphaned" process but it's too big to upload. Let me know if you want me to send it somewhere.

Thanks.

I also got an issue when I hooked up my Elgato HD60. It crashed immediately. And now I can not open OBS.

I also have this bug. I can reproduce this on both my laptop and older Desktop. Force closing and restarting OBS will fix it.

Version 0.16.6 for both versions.

In the interim, open Task Manager and kill OBS and try again. Did that fix it for you?

I tried this, did nothing for me when I restarted it still did a loading circle and just ran in the task manager again. I am trying to find out if it is Elgato related, are you guys using capture cards>?

I am also experiancing the same issue.

OBS 0.16.6
Shuting down process, fixes it.

Shutting down the process does not fix it for me. Unless there is a process that I am not finding. All I see is OBS32 or 64 bit.exe in the task manager, if there is something I am missing feel free to let me know.

Yes. I'm using the Elgato HD60 S. I haven't installed my HD60 Pro yet but @Adrian Schofield is using an HD60 Pro and experiencing the same issue.

It seems your issue might be slightly different than the rest of us. :(

Same here.

First time I open it, creates a obs process in the task manager but the program doesn't open, second time the program opens and 2 instances of obs on task manager.

Then I can close the program and open it and it works, It just happens the first time when I start Windows.

Using OBS 32 on Windows 10.

From the crash dump posted, so far it looks like the browser source is somehow responsible for the freezing. Make sure that you don't have any "cef-bootstrap.exe" processes lingering in the background before starting OBS.

I just checked and no, I don't have any lingering before I start OBS Studio.
