Hello.
I have created several scenes in OBS to use its virtual camera during my online music lessons. Among them there are different sources as screen capturing, screenshot of a virtual piano keyboard, different webcam sources and combinations of all of these.
But unfortunately, I can't use the OBS virtual camera comfortably with Skype on my 2017 iMac. For some reason there are exaggerated performance issues that make its use practically impossible and that I am not able to solve.
I think that my computer should be powerful enough to be able to work with both applications at the same time (i7, 4.2 GHZ, 64 GB RAM, Radeon Pro 580 8 GB), but when I'm on a Skype call and trying to use the OBS virtual camera with it, sometimes I get a lot of frame jumps due to an encoding delay until the image becomes absolutely frozen in Skype. I have verified that when this occurs, the VCXPC process started to consume a lot of system resources and CPU and probably this makes OBS unstable.
I've tried reducing both the OBS output and the original font sizes to 1280x720 and 30 fps and it seems to improve substantially, although I still occasionally lose a lot of frames if I try to open some other app like the Calendar, Safari or Mail.
Interestingly, when I use Zoom, I don't have any of these issues. I can even use scenes and profile output set to 1920x1080 and 60 fps without any issues and without loosing any frame. So, I understand that there is some conflict between the virtual camera of OBS and Skype that I would like to solve.
Are there any other settings I can tweak to improve this? Should I use Hardware Apple VT H264 or Software Apple VT H264 in output preferences instead of x264? Does this configuration affect the virtual camera or only other types of broadcasts? Maybe some other magic option within the OBS preferences that I can check to get performance improved and finally could use the virtual cam with Skype without issues?
Thank you very much!
