A recently popular and quickly growing open audio plugin format called CLAP is being developed, and I think it would make an excellent fit for the OBS project.
It is currently backed by two large and notable audio developers, Bitwig and U-He, gaining support from other large projects such as Reaper, and many smaller developers as well.
For those unfamiliar, here are a couple links featuring the official repo, an overview from U-He themselves, and the project page:
Aside from the obvious claim to allowing more plugins or "filters" available for use within OBS, more strong cases to adopt this standard include:
- Ease of and simplicity in implementation
- MIT Licensing and "open" ethos, reducing dependency on the existing commercial solutions
- Better efficiency in resource usage, especially regarding CPU overhead
- Multi-platform format availability
Again, I personally believe that this project shares a lot of the same goals as the OBS project, and I think it would allow the audio capabilities of OBS to improve and simultaneously future-proof, with relatively little development overhead and fewer worries about corporate litigation and licensing restrictions.
I strongly believe that in the future this will be the predominant audio plugin format that is the "Industry-Standard" for the additional benefits that it presents to musicians as well what is presented above, which will make it all the much more important to have it adopted by OBS and reduce friction for those wishing to use their tools to improve the quality of their productions, as after all -- it is musicians and audio engineers who are mostly responsible for these tools to begin with.
